There are 3 different length tailshafts for TH350s. The shortest (and most common for cars) is the 6" tailshaft. Most trucks got a longer 9" tailshaft. Station wagons and other long wheelbase trucks got a 12" tailshaft.

As for the starter/flywheel alignment, am I correct that the starter bolts to the engine block, not the transmission? AS long as the starter is bolted to the block, then the transmission would have nothing to do with it's alignment to the flyhweel. You can shim the starters in some cases for proper alignment to the flywheel.

If you're hearing the starter spin but it's not contacting the flywheel, this is most often a case of insufficient amperage at the starter or a bad starter. Check over all of your battery cables for rust or corrosion (positive and negative). It also wouldn't hurt to run the starter by an Autozone or Advance, etc and have them check it.

There are two different flywheels too. One has 153 and the other has 168 teeth. You can look at the starter to see which it is. If the bolts are staggered it a 168. If they are in a straight line it's a 153.

When you pull the starter out you may want to check the bendix and make sure the teeth are still in good shape and that it extends like it is supposed to.
